Gate, Birlingham, Worcestershire, March 28th, 2005

Gates have a number of symbolic meanings in Christian iconography and other spiritual teachings. Sometimes it signifies departure or the barrier between the righteous and the damned. However it can also represent the entrance into Paradise and I think this is the function which this particular gate would fill.

Setting sun with thistle, Fladbury, March 19th, 2005

There aren't many photographers who can resist shooting during the 'magic hour', just after dawn or just before sunset. Nor can many resist a thistle when they see one. I'm no exception

Defunct sign, Fladbury, March 13th, 2005

The Wood Norton estate as it exists today is primarily the creation of a French royal exile. In the late nineteenth century it was bought by the Duc d'Aumale (later the Duc d'Orleans), heir to French crown. A grand wedding, which the majority of royal families in Europe attended, was hosted here in 1907. On the family's return to France in 1912, the estate began to break up. The house became a school and then was bought by the BBC for use in World War 2. They still own part of the site although the house is now a private hotel. The estate itself is gradually decaying, avenues overgrown, land nibbled away at for development.

Highland cow & calf, Fladbury, March 13th, 2005

A local farmer started a herd of Highland cattle in the Vale of Evesham many years ago with just a few animals. There now seem to be hundreds of them. Although the scenery around Fladbury is pleasant, these beasts should really be surrounded by a backdrop of heather and mountains. Against my better judgment, here is a 'twee' shot of a mother and her calf - see any Scottish calendar for other versions!
